Omicron Cases Increase, MoH Urges Vigilance

PHNOM PENH: The Secretary of State and Spokesperson for the Ministry of Health, Or Vandine, has further urged citizens to take measures to maintain preventive measures as recommended by the Ministry of Health, including taking the Covid-19 vaccine, to prevent any serious cases or deaths by the virus, particularly in light of the new imported cases of the ‘Omicron’ variant detected in Cambodia.

Ministry of Health Spokesperson, Or Vandine, posted a message on Sunday saying that she understands "2022 will be the year that the Omicron virus infects the whole world, including Cambodia.” Therefore, people must remain vigilant and be prepared to respond to any eventual outbreak. She particularly urged all citizens to continue implementing the ‘3 Dos and 3 Don’ts’ policy and to get vaccinated to prevent severe cases, hospitalization and potential deaths.

The Ministry of Health recently announced two new cases of the Omicron variant on Saturday in two Cambodian women flying from the United States and France, with transits in South Korea and Singapore respectively. This is in addition to the case detected on Friday in an Irish man travelling in to Cambodia from Kenya via Bangkok and Dubai, and the first case of Omicron detected on last Tuesday in a pregnant Cambodian woman returning from Ghana. In total, Cambodia has so far reported four cases of the Omicron variant.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony of the Morodok Techo National Stadium on Saturday morning, Prime Minister Hun Sen stated that the government will continue its vaccination campaign, which is the primary method to save and protect lives from Covid-19, including any new variants, while he also encourages people to get used to living in the ‘new normal’, which includes every individual actively protecting themselves by implementing the recommended preventative measures such as the ‘3 Dos and 3 Don’ts’.

The Prime Minister also called on everyone to not panic about the newly detected Omicron cases, as the new variant has not yet shown any incidents of severe cases or deaths in the country, unlike previous outbreaks of the Delta and Alpha variants, hence citizens should maintain self-defense measures rather than panic.
